Only when the product meets all the requirements, can it be brought to market

Ivraina Brändle is responsible for product development and quality management at Pure Production AG. For the past year, the 27-year-old ETH graduate has been implementing new product ideas and explains in an interview how such a process works and what quality requirements must be met.

Ivraina, Pure Production AG has just received ISO 9001 certification. What does that mean for the company and its customers?
IVRAINA: ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management. It is an important tool for systematically recording and continuously improving customer satisfaction. With ISO 9001 external feedback can be documented and implemented internally. Without such a system customer feedback is often lost. It is very important for us to have a fact-based foundation that can be evaluated. This way, the process is structured and professionally organized.

What criteria does ISO 9001 certification follow?
I: We spent a year on the entire certification process. Many aspects have to be considered. One very important point is the continuous improvement process. External and internal feedback is recorded. Employees have access and can contribute at any time. Risk management is also essential: risks are assessed and discussed by the management or, in acute cases, eliminated directly. Document management is an additional aspect. All documentation is handled in one system. This provides a clear overview.

You are responsible for product development at Pure Production AG. What role do quality standards play here?
I: Quality standards are important in all processes, be it in customer care, product development, production, or packaging. In product development documentation is fundamental to ensure good quality. Compatibility tests and microbiological tests are an example of this. They provide a solid basis for supplying customers and consumers with great products and are helpful when answering questions.

How do you develop a new product?
I: First step is evaluating the feasibility. With CBD or other cannabinoids, it is necessary to check which substances can be dissolved in them. After chemistry comes financing. This is followed by product calculation, the exchange with customers and clarification of legal circumstances. Only when the product meets all the requirements, it can be brought to market. When it comes to cosmetic products, this process takes approximately six to seven months. After all, reliable compatibility and stability tests need to be carried out. This is the only way we can guarantee high quality.

How do you decide what to develop as a white label product?
I: I am in close contact with our sales team, which has a good feel for the market and of course knows what our customers want. The cannabis industry is still relatively young, which makes it exciting. There are still a lot of uncertain and undefined regulations. We must be flexible and react quickly to changes and new findings – from a research perspective as well as on a bureaucratic level. We focus on product groups, such as cosmetics, that are already established on the market.

What are you currently working on?
I: We are very busy expanding our cosmetics line. Our newest products are a toothpaste and a shampoo with CBD. We are always receiving requests from customers. Fulfilling these is a particular pleasure, because custom product formulations remain one of the most exciting challenges. In the future, however, we will also be developing phytopharmaceuticals.
